MAKING OUR VOICES HEARD

The Women & Politics Institute (AU), Video/Action, and Women in Film & Video invite you to a celebratory screening of excerpts from the film ONE WOMAN, ONE VOTE that documents the 70-year struggle for passage of the 19th Amendment and a preview of RESISTERHOOD that captures the stories of everyday Americans who became grassroots activists working tirelessly to defend our democracy and stop the erosion of our civil rights.  One hundred years may have passed since the ratification of the 19th Amendment, but the need for women’s activism in the political arena is still required. A conversation about how past struggles for voting rights can inform today’s struggle for representation will be moderated by Betsy Fischer Martin, Women & Politics Institute Director. Special guests include ONE WOMAN, ONE VOTE Director/Producer Ruth Pollak, RESISTERHOOD Producer/Director Cheryl Jacobs Crim, and Mimi Hassanein

ONE WOMAN, ONE  VOTE Synopsis: How could America call itself the world’s greatest democracy, but continue to deny the right to vote to more than half of its citizens? This program documents the struggle which culminated in the passing of the 19th Amendment in the U.S. Senate by one vote. Witness the 70-year struggle for women’s suffrage. Discover why the crusaders faced entrenched opposition from men and women who feared the women’s vote would ignite a social revolution.  Originally broadcast by American Experience in 1995, it will be re-broadcast by PBS in 2020.

RESISTERHOOD Synopsis:  This powerful documentary captures the stories of everyday Americans who became grassroots activists working tirelessly to defend our democracy and stop the erosion of our civil rights. RESISTERHOOD showcases the wave that just brought us the most ethnically, racially and gender diverse Congress in history. It shares stories of hope that will re-energize the movement and inspire even more people to join the fight to secure a bright future for our county. This film is in production.
